  • The Fishing

The Spokane River has been fishing well lately and is one of the better options around the region right now due to the aquifer recharge providing cold water to the river. Water temps have been fluctuating between 59-62 degrees over the last week on the lower river below Downtown Spokane. Fishing has still been best early and late in the day, once the sun is up high it’s been tougher. We’ve been doing well on dry-dropper rigs with a big chubby or hopper and various caddis nymphs; jig soft hackles, prince nymphs, caddis pupa. Nymph rigs have also been effective in the faster plunge pools and riffles. A heavy stone and caddis nymph combo will get it done.

  • The Fishing

A bit windy this week which made fishing tougher on the North Fork of the Coeur d'Alene. Looking ahead the temps look a little more comfortable than they have been which will help. Mornings will be the best on the NF CDA for two reasons... 1 - inner tubers will be out in force mid day - early evening especially on the lower half of the river. 2 - water temps are best in the morning, afternoon and evening are warm. Remember when water gets over 68/70 degrees give the trout a break. Usual summertime fly rigs can include, but not limited to: hoppers, ants, beetles, small chubbies or chernobyls, attractors, caddis. Droppers under a foam chernobyl or hopper are always a good starting point.

  • The Fishing

Summer on the St. Joe River has been good and should continue. If you are fishing the lower stretches you will have the usual inner tuber hatch mid day so go early. Typically this time of the year you can start fishing hopper rigs and of course ants / beetles will work all summer. Attractors will produce as well as caddis patterns. We have had good reports of just running big chubbies still producing. Hatches get sparse in the summer but some caddis, pmd's, goldens, and yellow sallies are usually around. Prospecting with a chubby / dropper (or just a regular chernobyl) is a good starting point.

  • The Fishing

Same deal this week... gunna sound like a broken record around here for awhile. NF Clearwater / Kelly Creek is a summertime favorite. Kinda like the St. Joe fishery, it will be a morning gig and evenings (check water temps in the evening for anything over 68 degrees). Classic patterns like caddis (x-caddis, elk hair, etc), Henry's Fork Golden Stones, pmd's, purple haze all good starting points. Hoppers should be fishing, ants too. Last reports out of here was it's fishing well.

Kootenai River - a great option with some of the coldest water around. Tough wade access, but great floating options.

Bass or carp fishing is a good alternative during the heat of the summer. Talk to the crew here for tips on where to go and what to use.

  • The Fishing

Want to try something different? Smallmouth fishing on the Lower Grand Ronde is exceptional this month. Smolt colored streamers, craw patterns, sparkle minnows, really whatever you want to throw will work. I always make a point of getting down here at least once in May, it’s not uncommon to have a triple digit day of smallie fishing when conditions are prime.
