  • The Fishing

Looks like we have another heatwave rolling through the region over this coming week. Getting out early in the morning or late evening will be best. We’re still in the midst of typical late summer fishing. Not much happening for hatches, a random caddis or mayfly here and there. Dry-dropper rigs have still been doing well, consider downsizing the dry or running lighter nymphs with the low and clear water. It’s worth dredging a nymph rig through some of the faster slots and deeper pools, although you’ll be sifting through more whitefish than trout it seems lately. It would be worth trying a streamer as well just to mix things up. Once we see a flow increase from Lake CDA, it’ll shuffle the deck a bit and get fish moving around more.

  • The Fishing

We are like a broken record here on the North Fork of the Coeur d'Alene River, but nothing will really change until we get rain and cooler temps. I guess the one thing I would say about late summer fishing is often times a small fly can do way better than larger patterns, whether it's fishing a small parachute, a midge, smaller ants, etc sometimes the small game is the way to go. Another week of hot afternoon temps will keep the better fishing to the first half of the day.

    - Mornings are best
    - Inner tubers during the heat of the day
    - Check water temps, above 68 give 'em a break (noon it was already this warm!)
    - Hoppers, ants, beetles, caddis, attractors
    - Chernobyls or hoppers with a dropper
    - Water is low, sight fishing in pools can be fun
    - Don't expect epic fishing... that was in the spring, but fish can be caught and fun had still.

  • The Fishing

Another hot week on the St. Joe River and hopefully the last of the year for 90+ degree days. The St. Joe River has been fishing well, this heat will slow the afternoons down and potentially the evenings. Hopper / droppers are always a good prospecting tactic in the summer. Riffles and boulder strewn runs is generally the best water in the late summer. This time of the season it can be worth fishing smaller patterns for picky fish, while the big bugs like hoppers and chernobyls generally find fish the smaller patterns can pick off some of the more educated fish. Also dropping your tippet size down and lengthening out your leader helps.

  • The Fishing

Hitting repeat this week! The North Fork of the Clearwater / Kelly Creek is always an option this time of the year. We’ve heard multiple reports of good fishing up here this last week. Good caddis and PMD hatches, small terrestrials and attractors have been good for searching patterns.

Bass fishing has been good; fish will be more active with overcast and cooler weather. Fish are still in the dog days mode, hanging in deeper water or under shade/structure. Targeting steep drop off areas with some rock structure has worked well lately.

Carp fishing is a good option in the central part of the state. Banks Lake, Snake River and Columbia river are all good fisheries throughout the summertime. Fish behavior can be strange this time of year, on super hot days carp will lay up on the surface and in weed beds mid-day and feed more consistently in the mornings and evenings.

  • The Fishing

It’s still very early for large numbers of fish returning to our inland steelhead rivers, but if you’re itching to get out, the lower Clearwater is an option. Don’t expect greatness this time of year but if you put the hours in you may find a unicorn. We’ll update steelhead reports as the season progresses.
