The Fishing

The Spokane River is always a go-to option for the heat of the summer thanks to the aquifer recharging the river and keeping it cool. Mornings and evenings will still be best for fishing and to avoid the inner tuber hatch mid-day. Indicator or euro rigs work year round, rubber leg stones, prince nymphs (jig version is preferred), tungsten caddis pupa kinda stuff, small attractor nymphs, etc. Soft hackles late in the evening can be fun. Chubby chernobyls and big hoppers in the summer with long droppers can and are productive.

The Fishing

The North Fork of the Coeur d'Alene River is in full summer mode. What is full summer mode? Well it's hot so mornings will be best, check water temps in the evenings, anything over 68 degrees hang it up and give the cutties a break. Inner tubers will be out in FORCE mid day - early evening. Hatches will be light to sparse. Maybe some caddis, a random pmd or golden stone, probably some yellow sallies, definitely throw some terrestrials (hoppers / ants / beetles). Attractor patterns whether dry or nymps are a definite yes. Water is low, find some riffles. You can catch fish here all summer, just adjust your expectations.

The Fishing

The St. Joe River is always a summer go-to. Summer is all about the dry / dropper fishing or just a single dry. Mike from the shop was the last one up here and he did very well. Hot days (or windy days where pressure is changing) will be tougher. When it's hot the mornings will be best. Check water temps when it comes to afternoon / evening fishing, anything over 68 degrees give the trout a break and enjoy the river in other ways (swimming, chillin', etc). The big turnouts with the beautiful green pools will be slower more than likely, fish the harder to reach water and you will probably have more success. Hatches will be sparse, but you could see some caddis or occasional pmds or goldens. It's definitely terrestrial and attractor pattern time.

Miscellaneous

The Fishing

NF Clearwater / Kelly Creek is a summertime favorite. Kinda like the St. Joe fishery, it will be a morning gig and evenings (check water temps in the evening for anything over 68 degrees). Classic patterns like caddis (x-caddis, elk hair, etc), Henry's Fork Golden Stones, pmd's, purple haze all good starting points. Hoppers should be fishing, ants too. Last reports out of here was it's fishing well.

Kootenai River - a great option with some of the coldest water around. Tough wade access, but great floating options.

Steelhead Rivers

The Fishing

Want to try something different? Smallmouth fishing on the Lower Grand Ronde is exceptional this month. Smolt colored streamers, craw patterns, sparkle minnows, really whatever you want to throw will work. I always make a point of getting down here at least once in May, it’s not uncommon to have a triple digit day of smallie fishing when conditions are prime.
