  • The Fishing

The Spokane fished well this last week and we have a favorable weather forecast over the next few days which should keep things rolling along. Some of the overcast mornings have had some decent hatches of small mayflies and caddis. The evening caddis hatch is hit and miss lately, but always worth swinging a soft hackle if you’re seeing risers right before dark. We saw a good uptick in fish looking for the big dry fly the last few days, smaller chubbies and hopper patterns have been getting the most attention. Tungsten soft hackles, small stonefly nymphs, really any heavy caddis nymph is a safe bet for a dropper underneath the dry fly. Fish have been spreading out a bit and we found a few hanging in the slower slicks and tailouts, especially on the days with cloud cover. Flows are still very low, but we should see an increase from Lake CDA sometime in early September.

  • The Fishing

Cooler temps have helped this week on the North Fork of the Coeur d'Alene, that being said the river levels are still very low so the fish are in the obvious deeper pools. It's going to be like this until the fall when we get some more rain and cool weather.

    - Mornings are best
    - Inner tubers during the heat of the day
    - Check water temps, above 68 give 'em a break (noon it was already this warm!)
    - Hoppers, ants, beetles, caddis, attractors
    - Chernobyls or hoppers with a dropper
    - Water is low, sight fishing in pools can be fun
    - Don't expect epic fishing... that was in the spring, but fish can be caught and fun had still.

  • The Fishing

The Joe has been fishing good and cooler temps in the forecast are what we like to see this time of year. This will help increase hatches and sustain fishing through the middle part of the day. Still keep an eye on water temps, once they are 68+ give the trout a break plus the fishing generally gets slow at those levels anyway. Terrestrials and attractors working; small ants and hoppers specifically, chubby / dropper combos, nymphing faster riffle boulder gardens / slots can be effective during the summer. Should see some PMD hatches on the overcast days.

  • The Fishing

The North Fork of the Clearwater / Kelly Creek is always an option this time of the year. We’ve heard multiple reports of good fishing up here this last week. Good caddis and PMD hatches, small terrestrials and attractors have been good for searching patterns.

Bass fishing has been good; fish will be more active with overcast and cooler weather. Fish are still in the dog days mode, hanging in deeper water or under shade/structure. Targeting steep drop off areas with some rock structure has worked well lately.

Carp fishing is a good option in the central part of the state. Banks Lake, Snake River and Columbia river are all good fisheries throughout the summertime. Fish behavior can be strange this time of year, on super hot days carp will lay up on the surface and in weed beds mid-day and feed more consistently in the mornings and evenings.

  • The Fishing

It’s still very early for large numbers of fish returning to our inland steelhead rivers, but if you’re itching to get out, the lower Clearwater is an option. Don’t expect greatness this time of year but if you put the hours in you may find a unicorn. We’ll update steelhead reports as the season progresses.
