Idaho Steelhead Season Closes December 7th
Let me start off by saying two things. 1 - I am not a biologist, I just know how to catch fish. 2 - We are just merely passing along info so you, the fishing public are informed as to what current regulations are we are not getting into the politics of all this.
This week Idaho announced the closure of the 2018 steelhead season as of December 7th under threat of a federal lawsuit by six organizations for Fish and Game operating a steelhead season without a federal permit, which is currently pending. Once the permit has been issued they we will reopen the steelhead season which sounds like potentially March 2019.
The closure is not due to low steelhead returns. For more information please reference Idaho Fish and Game's website for official press release:
- Fish and Game plans to reopen steelhead fishing in late winter or early spring 2019
- Idaho Fish and Game Commission on Nov. 14 voted to suspend the steelhead fishing season at the end of fishing hours on Dec. 7 under threat of a federal lawsuit by six organizations for Fish and Game operating a steelhead season without a federal permit, which is currently pending.
- Fish and Game has not had the permit since 2010, but has operated steelhead fishing in coordination with federal fisheries managers.
